US Navy North Island NAS Terminal Building

Project Profile Spotlight

US Navy North Island NAS Terminal Building

The Navy needed a new passenger terminal for their air traffic facility at Coronado Island but did not want to re-vamp their entire ramp system for aircraft and personnel parking. Also, they had just finished upgrading the interior and the security screening systems in their existing terminal facility which was housed inside a series of five aging connected structures with numerous leak problems at the building roof connecting points.

The Navy's request was for a new structure built right over the existing facility to save the cost of demolition, relocation, new tarmac and parking areas, site utility costs, and interior finishes for a new location. BlueScope Construction designed the Butler structure to clear span the existing facility and to give a distinguished appearance and focal point for aircraft landing at this location. All done within the Navy's timetable and budget.

Our local Builder crews were challenged to work safely while keeping the daily operations of this terminal open for business.

USCG - Boat Storage & Maintenance Facility, Boston, MA

Project Profile Spotlight

USCG - Boat Storage & Maintenance Facility, Boston, MA

roject is located on a concrete pier in Boston Harbor. Due to construction on the pier and close proximity to the ocean, all work had to be monitored by and meet with EPA requirements so no construction waste, including water run off would contaminate the harbor.

Foundations for this structure were attached to the existing concrete pier after waterblasting portions of the pier to expose existing reinforcing. Building design included aluminum roof panels and stainless steel wall panels as protection against the saltwater spray.

Phase Two of this project added more storage bays for this Homeland Defense Security Facility and had a short time table to be completed before the Democratic National Convention held in Boston that year.

This project is typical of the many storage and/or maintenance structures we provide to Fish and Wildlife Service, National Parks, BLM and other agencies. It is a standard Butler Building designed to meet the agency's specific purpose.

Many variations of this type of structure are available with specific widths, lengths and eave heights to meet your needs. Structural components can be modified to pick up specific loads for cranes or special conditions, and are always designed to meet the local area building codes - wind, snow, and seismic conditions.
